Yet another beautifully written article Meghan. Geez, you're a really good writer! I don't often point out people's talent like this on Medium, but you just write really well. Anyway...

I think this is an interesting topic you write about. I've personally started many statements with something positive to say about someone before issuing my complaint or frustration. The part I've highlighted here sort of highlights my own reason for doing so. I don't want to make it seem like I have a problem with somebody and that there's nothing to them that I like. Come to think of it, sometimes when I have a complaint to make about somebody, it's really only the one issue I'm raising that I have a problem with, and not them as a whole individual. Perhaps I preface my statements the way I do so that people don't get the wrong idea about how I feel about someone.

You're absolutely correct though. Politeness should not snuff out honesty or authenticity. Provided your delivery is tactful, we should not mince how we truly feel. Not every complaint has to be accompanied by a compliment beforehand.
